ALPMA membership

  • Audience: Law firm leaders and practice managers in Australasia
  • Size: 3,000+ members
  • Membership Cost: Pricing upon request
  • Platform: Website, member portal, webinars, in-person events, annual summit

ALPMA is the peak professional association for legal practice managers and law firm leaders across Australia and New Zealand, focused entirely on the business side of running a law firm. It's a member-run body with over 3,000 members and programming that spans operations, finance, HR, technology, strategy, and leadership.

Why join? If your firm is based in Australasia, ALPMA gives you something most communities can't: benchmarking data and research built specifically for your market, including an annual HR and salary survey covering thousands of staff across hundreds of Australian law offices.

You'll get access to 250+ on-demand recordings, 70+ annual events, and a learning library organized around the exact disciplines practice managers deal with—AML/CTF compliance, financial management, people and culture, and legal technology.

The annual ALPMA Summit and ALTACON conference is where the regional community comes together in person, which I think is hard to replicate anywhere else in the Asia-Pacific legal market.

2. ABA Law Practice Division - Best for US-focused practice management resources

American Bar Association Law Practice Division page
Explore the ABA Law Practice Division, a professional community focused on advancing legal practice through resources, education, networking, and insights in finance, technology, marketing, and practice management.
  • Audience: US-based lawyers, law firm leaders, and legal professionals
  • Membership Cost: From $195
  • Platform: Website, ABA Online Communities, webinars, in-person events, conferences

The ABA Law Practice Division is the American Bar Association's dedicated home for lawyers and legal professionals focused on the business of running a law firm, covering practice management, technology, marketing, and finance. It's run by ABA staff and elected volunteer leaders, and it's included free when you join the ABA.

Why join? If you're a US-based attorney or firm leader, the division gives you a lot for the price of ABA membership—particularly ABA TECHSHOW, one of the most well-known legal tech conferences in the country, plus Law Practice Magazine, CLE webinars, and a peer networking platform where you can connect with lawyers working through the same management challenges.

You'll also get access to 500+ on-demand CLE courses and a Lawyer Leadership Mastermind series, which makes it especially useful if you're actively trying to develop leadership skills alongside your practice management knowledge.

Legal Marketing Association website
Explore the Legal Marketing Association (LMA) community, providing legal marketing professionals with education, networking opportunities, industry insights, events, and resources to support professional growth.
  • Audience: Legal marketers, business development, and client service professionals in law firms
  • Size: 4,000+ members
  • Membership Cost: Pricing upon request
  • Platform: Website, LMA Connect online community, webinars, in-person events, annual conference

LMA is the only global community dedicated exclusively to legal marketing and business development, serving nearly 4,000 professionals across law firms and legal service providers worldwide.

It's run by a member-elected board and organized around the full spectrum of legal marketing practice—from business development and client services to marketing technology and communications.

Why join? If marketing and BD is your remit, LMA gives you a peer network that speaks your language—10 Shared Interest Groups let you drill into exactly what you work on, whether that's legal MarTech, competitive intelligence, or running a solo marketing team.

You'll get access to 300+ on-demand webinars, proprietary benchmarking research like the annual Legal MarTech Survey, and a structured skills framework (the LMA Body of Knowledge) that is genuinely useful for mapping your own professional development.

4. Lawyerist Lab - Best for small firm coaching

Lawyerist Lab homepage
Lawyerist Lab website featuring law firm management strategies, business systems, coaching, and practical support for small law firms.
  • Audience: Small law firm owners and solo practitioners in the US
  • Membership Cost: From $949/month
  • Platform: Website, online member community, Zoom, in-person LabCon event

Lawyerist Lab is a paid coaching program and peer community for small law firm owners, built around the Lawyerist Operating System—a structured framework covering strategy, systems, finance, and team.

It's run by the team behind the Lawyerist Podcast and The Small Firm Roadmap, and it's designed specifically for owners who want to build a firm that doesn't depend entirely on them.

Why join? Lab matches you with a dedicated business strategist for 3–4 hours of one-on-one coaching per month, plus weekly group sessions, quarterly planning, and a proprietary Small Firm Dashboard to track goals and finances in one place. The programming is staged by firm size and revenue, so you're working on challenges that are actually relevant to where your firm is right now.

I'd say the real draw is LabCon, the annual unconference where there are no keynotes and no vendor booths—just focused time with other firm owners working through the same problems you are.

5. Managing Partner Forum - Best for managing partner networking

Managing Partner Forum website
Explore Managing Partner Forum, a professional community providing leadership insights, resources, and networking opportunities for law firm leaders focused on advancing the business of law.
  • Audience: Managing partners and senior leaders of small and midsize law firms
  • Size: 10,500+ members
  • Membership Cost: From $695
  • Platform: Website, webinars, newsletter, in-person conferences, online AI Community

Managing Partner Forum (MPF) has been connecting managing partners and senior leaders of small and midsize US law firms since 2001, founded by consultant John Remsen, Jr. to give firm leaders peer-level content and community rather than generic legal education.

Why join? MPF's signature format—Managing Partner Idea Exchanges (MPIEs)—puts you in confidential small-group discussions with other firm leaders, which is the most valuable thing here and something you won't find at a typical legal conference.

The annual Leadership Conference is invite-restricted to managing partners of firms with 10+ attorneys, which keeps the peer quality high, and the free monthly webinars and MPF Weekly newsletter let you sample the benchmarking data and insights before committing to anything paid.

Institute of Legal Finance & Management website
Explore the Institute of Legal Finance & Management (ILFM), a professional organization supporting legal finance teams through education, professional development, and industry resources.
  • Audience: Legal finance, compliance, and management professionals in UK law firms
  • Membership Cost: From £150+VAT
  • Platform: Website, member-only online groups, virtual branch meetings, webinars, in-person conferences, print/digital journal

ILFM is the UK's professional membership body for legal cashiers, COFAs, finance directors, and practice managers responsible for client money and SRA compliance. It offers closed peer groups, a bi-monthly journal, formal qualifications, and a dedicated sub-brand for COFAs called iCOFA.

Why join? If your role involves legal accounts or SRA compliance, ILFM is one of the few places built entirely around those challenges. Membership includes closed peer groups, virtual branch meetings, the Legal Abacus journal, CPD training discounts, and annual salary benchmarking data.

I'd especially flag iCOFA, ILFM's sub-community for COFAs, which includes its own handbook, two annual conferences, and a dedicated peer network.

7. r/LawFirm on Reddit - Best free community for solo and small-firm practice management

Reddit r/LawFirm community page
Explore r/LawFirm, a Reddit community where solo practitioners and small-firm lawyers discuss legal practice management, business strategies, professional challenges, and industry insights.
  • Audience: Solo and small-firm lawyers focused on practice management
  • Size: 57,000+ members
  • Membership Cost: Free
  • Platform: Reddit

r/LawFirm is a free Reddit community built specifically for solo practitioners and small-firm owners who want peer advice on the business side of running a practice—not substantive legal discussion. It's been active since 2012 and now has more than 57,000 members.

Why join? I'd recommend this community if you want unfiltered, peer-to-peer input on real practice management decisions—billing models, trust accounting, case management software, hiring your first employee—from people who've actually dealt with them. The community wiki is a genuinely useful starting point, organized around two tracks: launching a firm and scaling one past five lawyers.

Because members post pseudonymously, you're going to get more honest takes on revenue, fees, and firm mistakes than you'd ever find on LinkedIn.

8. DC Bar Law Practice Management Community - Best bar-affiliated community for D.C. lawyers

DC Bar Law Practice Management Community webpage
Explore the DC Bar Law Practice Management Community, a professional network offering resources, programs, and networking opportunities to help legal professionals improve practice operations and grow their firms.
  • Audience: Lawyers and legal professionals interested in practice management, D.C.-centric
  • Membership Cost: From $94
  • Platform: DC Bar Communities Connect LISTSERV, webinars, in-person events, member portal

The DC Bar Law Practice Management Community is a bar-affiliated community for lawyers and legal professionals focused on the business and growth side of running a practice—organized through the D.C. Bar's 22-community program with steering committees covering Business of Law, Solo and Small Firm Practice, and Business Development.

It's D.C.-centric by design, so it's most valuable if you're practicing in or around the DMV area.

Why join? If you want bar-vetted programming rather than open peer discussion, this community gives you structured events, committee-led content, and access to a listserv where members exchange practice management advice in a credentialed, professional setting.

DC Bar members also get complementary access to the Practice Management Advisory Service, which offers free one-on-one consultations on topics like financial management, office technology, and business planning.

9. LPM Community - Best for UK SME law firm leaders

Legal Practice Management LPM website
Explore Legal Practice Management (LPM), a professional community connecting SME law firms across the UK and Ireland through networking, events, and practice management resources.
  • Audience: UK and Ireland SME law firm management leaders (10–250 headcount)
  • Membership Cost: Free
  • Platform: Mighty Networks, LPM magazine website, in-person LPM Conference

The LPM Community is a members-only online community on Mighty Networks run by Burlington Media Group—the publisher behind LPM magazine—built specifically for management leaders at UK and Ireland SME law firms with between 10 and 250 people.

It launched as part of a broader brand ecosystem that includes monthly magazine issues, annual research reports, and the flagship LPM Conference in London.

Why join? If you're managing a UK or Ireland SME firm, this community gives you a peer network that's gated to buyers only—suppliers and vendors can't join, so the conversations stay focused on real operational challenges like AI adoption, pricing strategy, client portals, and staff retention. You're also automatically matched to a regional sub-network when you join, which makes local networking far more practical than most online-only forums.

The combination of peer Q&A, a curated knowledge base with firm case studies, and access to LPM's annual research reports makes this one of the more well-rounded resources available for UK firm management leaders.

10. Manchester Law Society Practice Management Forum - Best for Greater Manchester law firms and chambers

Manchester Law Society Practice Management Forum webpage
Manchester Law Society’s Practice Management Forum connects legal practice managers to share knowledge, best practices, and practical solutions.
  • Audience: Practice managers and chambers managers in Greater Manchester legal organizations
  • Membership Cost: Pricing upon request
  • Platform: MLS website, in-person and virtual events, MLS app (planned)

Launched in October 2025, the Manchester Law Society Practice Management Forum is a peer network for practice managers, chambers managers, and office managers across Greater Manchester's law firms and barristers' chambers.

It was founded by Deborah Jackson of Burton Copeland and Vicky Griffin of Hugh James, and runs under the Manchester Law Society's committees program.

Why join? What I find genuinely useful here is the dual focus on both law firms and chambers—most practice management communities pick one, so if you're a chambers manager, your options are already narrower.

Events run every two to three months under Chatham House Rules, which means you get candid conversations on sensitive topics like SRA compliance, SAR breaches, and professional indemnity insurance without anything getting attributed back to you.
